A picture is worth a thousand words is a proverb that refers to the idea that complex stories can be told with just a single still image, or that an image may be more influential than a substantial amount of text. It also aptly characterises the goals of visualisation where large amounts of data must be absorbed quickly.

This module illustrates how the potential for developing teaching and learning resources with graphic desktop applications that include PowerPoint and Photoshop, is greatly enhanced with the application of a range of Web 2.0 technologies for delivering those resources via wikis and blogs.

>Image sources:

There are many WWW sources for graphics, photos and cartoons. The most popular technique for locating these sources is Google’s image search engine at http://images.google.com/ . Using Google’s Advanced Search function allows you to specify ‘file type’, ‘color’, ‘size’, and ‘faces’.
Whonu.com is a new search engine that aggregates other engines and provides access to a wider range of resources. The following diagram illustrates the aggregated engines for a colour image search using Whonu:

WWW host services for photos, graphics and video are sources of resources that can be embedded (refer to the "Online Delivery" section below) in class/subject wikis and blogs. Here is a sample of project management PowerPoint presentations available from the SlideShare host service - Why reinvent wheels?.

>Online Image Editors.

PowerPoint can be used to create graphics and apply enhancements to photos e.g. add text, callouts, borders, cropping, etc. The PowerPoint slide/s can then be saved as .gif/.jpg images for use as a teaching resource either in a handout or an online delivery tool.

However, the saved image will need to be cropped to remove the part of the slide surrounding the actual image. This can be done using desktop applications such as PhotoShop and Paint or an online WWW editing service such as PICNIK or FAUXTO. These editors also enable images (graphics and photos) to be further enhanced using functions that include rotate, sharpen, resize, and special effects.

In the following example the original image is downloaded from Flickr.com and inserted into a blank PowerPoint slide. PowerPoint is used to add text to the image and the image is then saved, using the "Save as" function, as a .jpg file and in this process is compressed from 40kb to 16kb. The image is then uploaded to the WWW image service Picnik where it is cropped from the slide format, the colour is changed to sepia and corners are added.

>Online Delivery of Teaching Resources.

There are a range of web host services that provide free storage for image files. Many of these services provide image players that can be embedded in wikis, blogs and web sites. After the images, presentations or documents have been uploaded the service provides a code in html that defines the size of a player and the file to be played in that player. The code for the player can be copied and embedded in a wiki or blog.
In the example below on the left, a word document has been embedded in this wiki via the Scribd host service.
Using the Scribd player's toolbar you can scroll, zoom and pan, download or listen to an mp3 version of the document.
In the example below on the right, a PowerPoint presentation has been embedded in this wiki via the SlideShare host service.
Using the SlideShare player's toolbar you can move through the presentation or click the SlideShare icon and view a full screen version of the presentation.

>Wiki Books

A wikibook is a book that can be authored collaboratively by teacher and student groups.
In the collaborative development of a wikibook the topics or chapters for the subject are defined and allocated to members of the group/class for development. A wiki or a space within a wiki is created for the wikibook and structured to enable chapters to be embedded by the “book’s authors. Content may be added directly to the wikibook or embedded from a WWW host service e.g. Slideshare for Powerpoint, Vimeo for video.

>Digital Reports

Digital Reports refers to using new digital tools to help teachers and students to prepare multimedia reports that summarise the results of projects. These reports usually takes the form of a relatively short summary of an overall project (less than 5 minutes). The philosophy of digital reporting is one of using technology to enable teachers and students to produce works that present information using images (photos and graphics) and sound. The product is a 2-5 minute film that combines a narrated script, photographic images and a musical soundtrack.

As with wikibooks, high level learning can occur in designing and developing digital reports as students analyse available content, synthesise selected material and progressively evaluate the development of the product.

In this exercise you will upload teaching resources to the SCRIBD WWW host service and obtain the html code for embedding your resource in a class/subject wiki or blog.

>Tutorials With Images

In this exercise you will use a digital camera to obtain a photo of a product for an online tutorial and its online test. You will edit, annotate and save the photo as two JPEG image files using PowerPoint. One photo will be used for the tutorial in this exercise and the other for the test in the following exercise. You will insert the photo into MSWORD document (the start of your online tutorial) and use the SCRIBD host service to deliver the tutorial to students via your wiki/blog.

>Tests with Images

In this exercise you will create and embed in your wiki a test, with images for the tutorial in the previous exercise. You will use the ProProfs.com service.

>PowerPoint Presentations

In this exercise you will upload PowerPoint presentations to the Slideshare WWW host service and obtain the html code for embedding your presentation in a class/subject wiki or blog.
Note: The slides in this PowerPoint presentation can be used in following exercises.
Suggestion: Create a mini presentation - TITLE SLIDE - MAIN SLIDE - END SLIDE that can be enhanced with a voice over narration and background music in a later exercise. If a digital camera is a available, obtain a photo/s to insert in your slideshow e.g. photo of yourself in the title slide introducing the presentation.

>Images and Audio Narrations

In this exercise you will create an audio and graphic slidecast using the BubbleShare slideshow service. You will obtain the html code, from BubbleShare for embedding your presentation in a class/subject wiki or blog.

>PowerPoint Presentations and Audio Narrations

In this exercise you will create a Slidecast that combines a voice narration with PowerPoint presentations stored with the SlideShare host service and embed slidecasts in your wikis or blogs.

>Digital Reports with Voice and Music

In this exercise you will create a Digital Report using the Photo Story software application and preprepared images and a voice narration script. You will be able to save the report as a .wmv file and upload that file to a WWW host service and obtain the html code for embedding your presentation in a class/subject wiki or blog.
Note: Prior to starting this exercise convert the slides in your PowerPoint presentation to .jpg images by selecting SAVE AS from PowerPoint's FILE menu and selecting JPG.
